Got Flu? Feel Better Faster

Here are a few easy, non-medication tips to speed up flu recovery or, at the least, make you feel better.

These excerpts are from an article by Meg Hemphil (1). Please use the footnote below to read the full post.

  1. Eat Soup – Chicken soup mildly reduces congestion; hot, spicy soups are recommended in Chinese medicine to treat upper respiratory infections and promote mucus drainage.
  2. Get Rest – Rest is one of the best ways to combat illness. If you cannot sleep, at least stay off your feet to rest. If your sinuses are congested, keep your head propped up, too.
  3. Drink Water – Dehydration often accompanies the flu. Juice, broth, and lemon water are also helpful.

  1. Drink Hot Tea – Hot liquid loosens congestion in the chest and sinuses. Herbal teas are best; avoid caffeine and alcohol as they increase dehydration. Dr. Andrea Nakayama’s suggests a honey-ginger-lemon remedy:
  • Steep a half-inch knob of ginger in 1 cup of boiled water. Pour into a mug filled with ¼ lemon juice and a tablespoon of honey.
  1. Use Vitamins Wisely – Vitamin C reduces inflammation and most vitamins improve immune function, but overuse can cause diarrhea and more dehydration.
