Got Flu? Feel Better Faster

January 29th, 2013

Here are a few easy, non-medication tips to speed up flu recovery or, at the least, make you feel better.

These excerpts are from an article by Meg Hemphil (1). Please use the footnote below to read the full post.

  1. Eat Soup – Chicken soup mildly reduces congestion; hot, spicy soups are recommended in Chinese medicine to treat upper respiratory infections and promote mucus drainage.
  2. Get Rest – Rest is one of the best ways to combat illness. If you cannot sleep, at least stay off your feet to rest. If your sinuses are congested, keep your head propped up, too.
  3. Drink Water – Dehydration often accompanies the flu. Juice, broth, and lemon water are Immerse Yourself in the Full Healing Contemplation Here »

“Success is Not in the Winning”

January 25th, 2013

We’ve all seen the people whose lives are driven by a distorted desire to “win” in everything; you see them exerting far too much effort to always be first in the check-out lane at the grocery store, first to the exit on the interstate, first to the empty parking space, first to greet the boss when he passes through the office, etc.  A distorted view of winning can cause a person to harm the otherwise potentially good relationships in his or her life, as well skip over quality decisions and necessary paths in life to get ‘what they want’ or ‘where they want to be’ too quickly.

Wisdom and a Winning Attitude

I truly enjoy coming across someone who approaches life with more wisdom than is usually seen among his peers or in the general population. That is part of the reason I appreciate so much following the career of pro tennis player, Rafael Nadal. Not typically a sports fan, I began following his career after a friend wanted to watch Wimbledon at our home the first year that Rafa and Roger Federer played in the finals. I was extremely impressed with the respect they demonstrated toward each other and the dignity they brought to the sport.

I happened upon some quotes regarding a video presented at a gala for Rafa’s charity foundation; they explain a little more clearly the source of Rafa’s winning attitude Immerse Yourself in the Full Healing Contemplation Here »

Simplifying the New Year

January 22nd, 2013

As you solidify your vision for the New Year, improve life by including the concept of simplicity!

With the New Year comes new hopes, new visions for reaching goals and dreams with regard to health, family, career, finances, spiritual life, and self-improvement.  As mentioned a few weeks ago, even vacation can be a goal in the New Year for the self-employed business person.  As I have begun pondering my own goals for the New Year, a recurring theme has surfaced from a variety of sources, that of greater joy through simplicity.

Here are 7 ways to improve your life and joy in the New Year by implementing simplicity:

1.  When considering goals, purchases, acquisition, consider the level of ongoing maintenance.

Before you set your sights on any additions to your life in the New Year, consider the level of responsibility involved.  Pretty much everything in life takes maintenance and maintenance takes both money and time.  If you desire to add any possession to your household, do you actually want to deduct from other areas of your life the additional finances and time it will take to maintain it?  For example, if you wanted a swimming pool for the family or a boat for recreation, it takes both time and funds to maintain it.  Consider, would you actually be happier putting the maintenance time into family time or personal time?  Would you be happier having the money used to maintain the item to be available for smaller joys all year through?  The example is of a larger acquisition, but the same principle applies to Immerse Yourself in the Full Healing Contemplation Here »

Better Person, Better Year – Part 2

January 15th, 2013

Table of contents for Better Person, Better Year

  1. Better Person, Better Year – Part 1
  2. Better Person, Better Year – Part 2

We’re continuing our post on having the life you desire and the best year ever by being a better person.

This is Part 2 of a 2-Part post.  If you missed Part 1, please use the series link above.

This is a continuation of resolutions by Jonathon Edwards, a famous historical American, which focus on diligently improving his own person during the course of the year.  We are using them as examples for improving ourselves so that we will have a better year. As Jonathan Edward’s list of resolutions is in old English, I’m going to put the original quotes followed by a summary of my own in blue italics

22. Resolved, To endeavour to obtain for myself as much happiness in the other world as I possibly can, with all the power, might, vigor, and vehemence I am capable of, or can bring myself to exert, in any way that can be thought of.  More forceful than the earlier quote, it is a challenge to use extremely intense amounts of your energies and abilities to have a happy life, as opposed to pouring your energies into people or situations you cannot change.

24. Resolved, Whenever I do any conspicuously evil action, to trace it back, till I come to the original cause; and then, both carefully endeavor to do so no more… Often, we easily focus on other’s failures, especially those which negatively effect us. Be a better person this year by at least putting the same amount of energy, if not more, into changing you.  When you’ve done something obviously wrong, consider Immerse Yourself in the Full Healing Contemplation Here »

Better Person, Better Year – Part 1

January 11th, 2013

Table of contents for Better Person, Better Year

  1. Better Person, Better Year – Part 1
  2. Better Person, Better Year – Part 2

Examining how to be a better person is a key factor in having the better year that you desire.

In addition to creating a definite plan of goals and dreams for this new year, realizing specific ways to become a better person is an essential part of making this year better than any year in the past!

I came across a list of New Year’s resolutions by Jonathon Edwards which focus on diligently improving his own person during the course of the year.  As his list was extremely detailed, 70 resolutions in all, I’m picking out some for us to focus on, keeping the original numbers with them, and then providing a link below to the full list for those who want to read it in its entirety.  Edwards, a famous person in American history (1703-1758), was considered an intellectual, philosopher, and theologian. He was president of Princeton University at his death.

As Jonathan Edward’s list of resolutions is in old English, I’m going to put the original quotes followed by a summary of my own in blue italicsThis post is Part 1 of a 2-Part post.

5. Resolved, Never to lose one moment of time, but to improve it in the most profitable way I possibly can. Time is such a valuable gift; as we cannot get back a single moment of time lost, it will benefit you this year to keep in the forefront of your mind to make the most of every moment, treating it as the thing of infinite value that it is.

6. Resolved, To live with all my might, while I do live.  Similar to valuing each moment, endeavor to use all of your best abilities and energies to live this life and enjoy living it.

7. Resolved, Never to do any thing, which I should be afraid to do if it were the last hour of my life. This is a great way to improve one’s person. If you are faced with a choice Immerse Yourself in the Full Healing Contemplation Here »

Visualizing Your Dreams

January 8th, 2013

Visualization or creating a mental image of your dreams is an effective technique for reaching your goals.

The terms may vary at different points in history, but visualization is a healthy, effective concept that has been used for achieving one’s personal destiny for 1000’s of years. Whether you call it dreaming, vision casting, or the current term of visualization, creating mental images of your dreams and goals is a technique emphasized now by scores of life coaches and other career experts.

I came across a quote this week by Pablo Picasso, “Everything you can imagine is real.”

I thought it was very fitting to this concept. What you imagine, dream, or visualize may not be tangible (where you can touch it or see it) at the present moment, but imagining or visualizing can make that dream tangible. Jesus spoke a similar concept in Mk. 11:23,

I most certainly tell you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is happening; he will have whatever he says. (WEB)

Notice two things: Jesus said this is “absolutely” a true concept Immerse Yourself in the Full Healing Contemplation Here »

Dry skin? Easy Skin Care Help

January 5th, 2013

The winter months bring added desire for skin care help with dry skin problems.

Those already with dry skin do not look forward to the added irritation that winter weather brings, as severe dry skin can be quite painful, even leading to bleeding, and definitely an unwanted distraction during daily responsibilities.

I recently read a helpful article with good, easy skin care help for dry skin by Dr. David J. Foreman, Herbal Pharmacist, who writes a monthly newsletter for the Vitamin Shoppe chain of stores. (We buy most of our supplements there.) The information below contains excerpts from his article on “Winter Dry Skin Tips.” You can find more of Dr. Foreman’s articles at www.VitaminShoppe.com, click on Articles and More at the top, then on Advice from Experts/Herbal Pharmacist; you will then see the archives on the right.

The first step for skin care is using an EFA, essential fatty acid, such as fish oil or a vegetarian source containing flax, borage, or Evening Primrose oil.

Though either type works well for dry skin, Dr. Foreman prefers the fish oil as it provides many additional health benefits not derived from the vegetarian oils. He, his friends, and family have found that the EFAs work better than anything else previously tried Immerse Yourself in the Full Healing Contemplation Here »
