With about 12.4 million people being diagnosed with some form of cancer in 2008 and 7.6 million actually dying from the disease last year, cancer prevention is an important topic for all of us.

There are 4 Preventative Measures for Cancer that have come more into the spotlight in the medical field.

Dr. Mercola recently sent out a couple of newsletters with good articles on cancer prevention. The first is on the 4 new focuses for prevention. The second contains his list of 11 simple steps to cancer prevention. I want to share the excerpts with you from those articles in these 2 posts with links to the full articles so that you can read in more detail.

Vitamin D

If people around the world optimized their vitamin D levels, about 30 percent of cancer deaths — which amounts to 2 million worldwide and 200,000 in the United States — could be prevented each year.

On a personal level, you can decrease your risk of cancer by more than half simply by optimizing your vitamin D levels with sun exposure.

The risk of skin cancer from the sun comes only from excessive exposure. Meanwhile, countless people around the world have an increased risk of cancer because their vitamin D levels are low or deficient. In the U.S., the late winter average vitamin D is only about 15-18 ng/ml, which is considered a very serious deficiency state. Meanwhile, it’s thought that over 95 percent of U.S. senior citizens may be deficient, along with 85 percent of the American public. Hypothyroidism and Natural Cures

Over 45 million people suffer from vague symptoms that they think are a normal part of life and are actually caused by subclinical hypothyroidism, a condition that goes undiagnosed in half the people who have it. (1)

Symptoms such as chronic fatigue, feeling sluggish in the morning, and memory or concentration difficulties are common symptoms of subclinical hypothyroidism. Obviously, these symptoms can occur from other deficiencies as well, but this statement from Dr. Mark Hyman, M.D. of UltraWellness explains why it is such a commonly undiagnosed problem:

Subclinical hypothyroidism may trigger many low-grade symptoms, such as chronic fatigue, trouble losing weight, mild depression, constipation, and more, yet it causes just slight changes in your blood tests. In fact, it often only shows up in tests that most conventional medical doctors never perform, leaving most people to accept the symptoms as a normal part of their lives. (1)

The purpose of this article is not to cause panic or unnecessary concern, but I am living proof of such a situation, with my under active thyroid and lack of iodine absorption never being diagnosed until in my 40’s. After researching the subject, in retrospect, many of the symptoms (more than listed here) I have had my entire life. My kinesiologist was the first doctor to make any improvements in this area.

I recently came across an article about coconut oil as a possible nature help for hypothyroidism.

Sleep Disruption and Re-Setting Your Biological Clock

I read a fascinating article last month by Dr. Joseph Mercola on sleep disruption. He described how our bodies were designed for dusk to dawn sleep and that the development of electric lights has thrown off our biological clocks, causing many people to live in a state of permanent jet lag.

He then gives several tips on re-setting your biological clock for effective sleep patterns. These tips not only address the times we choose to sleep but various light sources that affect us which we may not normally think of.

Achieving Deep Sleep

Most people admit to being tired and exhausted the majority of the time. Many suffer from restless sleep for a variety of reasons and would do anything for a good night’s sleep!

I recently read an article, it may have been by Dr. Mercola, that said most Americans actually exist in a continual state of jet-lag due to throwing off their internal clocks by not making a habit of a dusk to dawn sleep pattern. The article below quoted in Dr. Mercola’s newsletter says that “Americans now get about 25 percent less sleep than they did a century ago.” In addition to health problems such as weight gain, depression, high blood sugar, increased cancer risk, and brain damage, it said “an estimated 71,000 people are injured in fall-asleep crashes each year.”

In this quote from Dr. Mercola’s newsletter, there are 10 steps for achieving deep sleep.

Below the quote is a link to his full newsletter. Once there, look for 2 other links. After the 10 steps to deep sleep quoted in his newsletter, there is a link to a Reader’s Digest Article with 14 more steps for a good night’s sleep. However, Dr. Mercola has made his own list of 33 Secrets for a Good Night’s Sleep and you will see it at the end of his comment section. These are all good, practical tips, some of which we had already implemented in our household, and some we are going to begin tonight!

Let Knowledge Heal You

This post is a Physical Reflection, geared specifically toward prevention and/or healing of one’s physical body.

It is vital to continually be increasing in knowledge that will improve our spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical health. New knowledge of how to take good care of your body is always becoming available and is something we should do our best to stay current with. God says, “My people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge (Hos. 6:4),” and His point obviously applies to far more than just one’s spiritual life.

New Cell Phone Study

I want to share with you a recent study that few people have heard about, as it just came out in February 08. There have long been questions about the dangers of cell phones, as they are so new that it is impossible to tell the harm that may come after 20 years of using them. Some people believe that brain tumors have been caused by thermal damage coming from cell phones, labeled on your phone with a SAR rating. However, this new study shows that it is actually the information-carrying radio waves that can cause a host of physical consequences such as headaches, fatigue, sleep disruptions, poor concentration, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and ultimately cancer.

Emotional Healing Parallels Physical Healing

Want physical health? Your emotional hurts may be as much as 85% of the root cause of your physical health problems!

There was an astounding statistic in an article on 12 Tips to Preventing Cancer from Dr. Mercola’s email newsletter which said, “Even the CDC [government's Center for Disease Prevention and Control] states that 85 percent of disease is caused by emotions. It is likely that this factor may be more important than all the other physical ones listed here…”(1) Those of us who readily acknowledge our need for emotional healing will have little difficulty listing a broad range of physical conditions that are in need of healing as well.

To see physical healing, we must come to terms with the emotional hurts of the past and present.
